Menthol crystal has two isomers (D-type and L-type). The natural menthol is mainly the levorotatory isomer (L-menthol). Menthol here refers to racemic menthol (DL-menthol),DL type menthol crystal is used as an odorant in toothpaste, perfume, drinks and confectionery. Cooling antipruritic effect,for headache and nose, pharynx, laryngitis, etc. Its esters are also used in spices.
Introduction of Menthol powder:
Menthol crystals are cooling, refreshing, and have a pleasantly strong minty aroma. They are often used in cosmetics, salves, balms, medicated creams, throat lozenges, toothpaste, mouthwash, gum, foot sprays, pain relief or cooling body products, shampoos, conditioners, liniments, shaving creams, oral or throat sprays, compresses, medicated oils, and cooling gels. 1. Natural menthol
Mentha arvensis is the primary species of mint used to make natural menthol crystals and natural menthol flakes.
2. Chemical properties
Menthol reacts in many ways like a normal secondary alcohol. It is oxidised to menthone by oxidising agents such as chromic acid, though under some conditions the oxidation can go further and break open the ring. Menthol is easily dehydrated to give mainly 3-menthene, by the action of 2% sulfuric acid. PCl5 gives menthyl chloride.
3. Biological properties
Menthol's ability to chemically trigger cold-sensitive receptors in the skin is responsible for the well known cooling sensation that it provokes when inhaled, eaten, or applied to the skin.
